The aqueduct (lat. aquaeductus "water pipe") is a structure for transporting water.

In the broader sense, the term is mainly used for water-bearing bridges. They were used to supply water to ancient Roman cities. The Roman water pipes, of which the aqueducts were only sections spanning valleys and rivers, usually transport water from point A to point B using the free gradient without additional energy. In individual cases, these water pipes were fifty kilometres or more long.
The best known are the aqueducts of the Romans, as they were often led on arched arched positions and belong to the most important buildings of antiquity. The pipes of the Romans were mostly stone channels, but were also occasionally made of wood, lead or leather. The pipes leading into the individual houses were usually made of lead, as excavations in Pompeii revealed. Some aqueducts had several floors and each had water from a different spring.
Since the water had to continue flowing steadily, the aqueducts were built so that they had a steady slight gradient. This was precisely measured by former architects. According to Vitruvius, the gradient was at least 0.5%.
The beginning of the aqueduct is the spring house. The end of the course forms the so-called castellum, in which the water was cleaned of stones and coarse dirt and from where it was led via pipe systems into the houses, baths and gardens. Special officials were responsible for the regulation of the water allocation, who ensured the protection of the plants by strict laws.

Water towers (pressure towers) were used to supply water to higher places, e.g. the Acropolis of Aspendos, which could push the water to considerable heights using gravity.
