The Boğazköy Museum was opened on 12 September 1966 and restored in 2011. The museum shows artefacts from the Hittite capital Ḫattuša. The ground floor, which begins with the Chalcolithic period (the Copper Age), the Early Bronze Age and the Assyrian trading colonies, continues chronologically with the Phrygian, Galatian and Roman periods in the first room and ends with the Eastern Roman period. When you enter the museum, you stand in front of the two sphinxes of the Sphinx Gate in Hattusha. Since they were badly damaged by fire, they were brought to Berlin for restoration in 1907. In 1924 one of the sphinxes returned to Turkey after restoration and was exhibited in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. The second remained in the custody of Berlin museums, but after lengthy negotiations was returned in 2011 to reopen the museum. Both sphinxes have now been on display at the Bogazkoy Museum since 26 November 2011. |

The state and social structure of the Hittites is explained on numerous illustrated panels. Two huge ceremonial vessels - one with a bull's head as a spout - are displayed in huge showcases and dominate the middle of the hall. |

In the small museum garden a Hittite sphinx, hieroglyphic inscriptions as well as milestones and tombstones from the Roman and Byzantine periods are exhibited. |
