Çorum Müzesi

The Çorum Archaeological Museum exhibits numerous finds from nearby Hittite towns, including the capital Hattuša, Šapinuwa and Alacahöyük.

The Çorum Museum includes local museums in Alacahöyük and Bogazkale (Hattuša). The first museum in Alacahöyük was founded in 1940, the museum in Bogazkale was opened on 12 September 1966, and the museum in Çorum was opened on 13 October 1968. In the year 2000 the museum moved into the present building. It was built in 1914 as a hospital and later housed an agricultural school, a health school, a business school, a technical school and the Atatürk University. It was built in the late 19th century style and is a listed building. It was destroyed in a fire in 1988, restored and reopened on 11 March 2003 as the present museum.

On four floors, the museum houses finds from all periods from the Copper Stone Age to the Bronze Age to the Roman and Byzantine epochs.
Most of the exhibits are from the surrounding Copper Age and Hittite sites, including Alacahöyük, Kussaray, Hattuša, Šapinuwa, Hüseyindede and Eskiyapar. On the ground floor you can see a replica of a Hattian princely tomb, metal objects (standards), statuettes and ceramics from Alacahöyük, as well as the early Hittite vase of Hüseyindede decorated with coloured reliefs. There are also pottery vessels, figures, cuneiform tablets and stelae from Hattuša.
A sword with cuneiform engraving by Tudhalija II from Hattuša is remarkable.
Also on the ground floor and first floor are weapons, ceramics and jewellery from Šapinuwa. Another part of the collection contains artefacts from the time of the Assyrian trading colonies (Karum). The second floor contains finds from the Phrygian period from Eskiyapar, Pazarli, Mecitözü, Alacahöyük and Hattuša.
Furthermore, finds from Roman and Byzantine times from various places in the area can be seen there and on the third floor. The exhibition is rounded off by an ethnographic section on the ground floor.
