The archaeological museum in Burdur was opened in 1969 at its present location. The ancient finds from Burdur and the surrounding area were formerly collected and preserved in the library building of the Bulguroglu School. As a result of the archaeological excavations in Hacilar, Kuruçay, Höyücek, Incirhan, Kibyra, Kremna, Bubon and Sagalassos, the number of movable exhibits in the museum has reached 70,000 to date, collected by confiscation, donations and purchase. Today it is one of the richest and most important museums in Turkey.
The ground floor was dedicated to the excavation in Sagalassos. Upon entering the museum one stands in front of the magnificent and imposing dancer frieze, which decorated the heroon above the upper agora with the Antonius Nymphaeum. To the left of the entrance were the busts of Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius, two of the most important Roman emperors, and two legs, each belonging to one of them. |
